A light celebration

We will have
candle lights
all get their own

They will arrange
for music system
green carpets
chairs and in-house DJ

We will have
light snacks
all come empty stomach

They have cancelled
carnival, yesterday
to honor the brutal killing

Post light dinner
We can shake a leg
twist and turn
to latest Bollywood numbers
and do little dance

A nation soon forgetting
in disguise of concern
creating a mockery of celebration
making the shame
an act of past
to welcome the new year

we sit on a time bomb
waiting it to implode
in our neighborhood
until then
we ignore

the sick body and mind
are the common man
part of your support system
a driver, a guard, a gym instructor
a relative, anybody

but we continue to make believe
the tragedy was theirs
we are safe
the needle did not prick us
so we ignore

waiting until
the blood spills
here and now
only then we scream foul
blame the society and system
cry innocence
we are victim
we are victim

until then , we continue
our light celebration

What can you do?

We have been brought up with this question.

So you see there are many reason to sit on the couch and wonder at the failure of system and society.

What can the politicians do?

  1. call parliament session
  2. introspect and discuss with open mind
  3. pass laws that restore confidence in citizens
  4. laws that are clear and easy to implement
  5. debar any MP/MLA with criminal record against women
What can the police do?
  1. Reach out to all sections of society
  2. Arrange for an open hour in every police station when any women can come and discuss
  3. Videograph the event and post it on internet
  4. Publish the active cases against women with the action that they are taking
  5. Make their friendly faces appear in every public face with the attitude of "May I Help You?"

What can the judiciary do?

  1. Start special session for all pending cases against women
  2. publish the progress on the internet
  3. disallow appeals by convicts from lower courts

What can you do?
  1. Keep the issue alive
  2. keep lighting candles
  3. open helplines, NGOs, volunteers who can prevent recurrance
  4. keep writing, talking, walking the issue
  5. Sex educate schools and children
  6. Spiritualize all sections of society
Did I or You miss anything?

A nation weeps

From the rustic village
a hope was born
with little wings
she left her home
to find life in the city
a capitol for hundreds of years
saw many dynasties rise and fall

a young bud
adjusting in the city's darkness
hoping to blossom
grow and expand
earn some and give some
back to the village

little did she realize
about vultures in darkness
sick minds , weak bodies
were gathering
around her

engulfed and suffocated her
killed her body
removed her spirit
the will to live
kept fighting for a while

the end came , offshore
the spirit was free
the body was back

rest of the nation wept
promising action
politicians and police slept
avoiding action

for in their fold
there are many
who commit similar crimes
even they are headed by women
but lack the spine
for spirit of power
is all consuming
relieving them of the morality

a change we hope
and a change must come
for fighting through winter
there are some
who walked the street
and lit the candles

a nation moves
from living room
to protest on streets

for every tear
wipes the shame
will earn its place

train robbery

They are old couple
moving around
in indian railways
post retirement

having served the
Indian Railways
all their lives

they travel
second class
got confirmed berths
in two compartments
from dadar to jhansi
settled their bags
and lying to sleep

into the reserved compartment
at eleven in night
a crowd of bhaiyyas
going to Gorakhpur alight

they fight, scream, shout
for their berth rights
with utter disregard
for the rest of confirmations inside

the husband concerned
exchanged seats with the wife
took a bag along
that was settled inside

someone would have noticed
the bag moving
alongside the wife

in the middle of night
took the bag to toilet
took out the shaving kit
took the new saree and blouse
it was a gift
worn only once
the thief
packed all in little kholi
left the bag

in the morning a little boy
Aunty, is the bag in toilet yours

They could only wonder
the Railways they served
had become a safe haven
for taking away
the little things

Bangalore to Shimoga - christmas vacation 2012 #Malnad - the start

Christmas 2012 was on the horizon.
The children's earnestness was glaring from their eyes, where will we go and what will we do?

We were late but then +Mayank Sharma shared few ideas. The second one looked feasible and we decided to tag along to a homestay somewhere in Shimoga, Karnataka.

A day before the departure the packing was in full swing. 2 of us were sick so the family discussion began with a concern from head of family. The head of family thought that the cold and cough will deteriorate as one was hardly able to talk and other's nose was running. The discussion was thought as an attempt to hijack and call off the travel plan. There were tears and accusations. In the end the family discussion fell apart and nobody knew if we were really going. We just hoped to get up in morning and go.

Fortunately, we got up the next day and slowly it dawned on us that we were indeed going.

We hit the NICE road from Kanakapura and for toll of INR 84 came out near Neelamangala. We hit NH4 and went into a toll for INR 20. We continued on NH4 to get into another toll for INR 31. We reached the next toll and luckily the receipt from the previous toll worked here.

We saw Kamat and stopped to have breakfast. The place was overcrowded, understaffed and chaos written all over it. We were standing on people's head to help them vacate the table so that we could get some sitting place. People were scampering on seeing the food coming on buffet, they fell on each other when a chair inside was emptied. After enough wasted time we left with half filled stomach.

Then we saw another Kamat on other side of the highway, just a few kilometers away. It was empty and inviting but we went along.

At Tumkur, we took the bypass. Its a slender exit away from highway. Once on bypass it looks like a normal city road and is mostly straight before it merges into the state highway to Shimoga.

The road to Shimoga is straight. Just before the city is a deviation that goes towards Mangalore. It goes to a bridge and a left has to be taken immediately after to take the road to Tirthahalli. This is the point were we discussed where were we exactly headed to.

The journey was helped along with just enough sun that relaxed the cough and cold of the sick people. As the wife suggested the winter here is different from that of Bangalore.

The road to Tirthahalli meanders besides Tunga, with thick forest on the right. You get a bird sanctuary, an elephant camp and wildlife sanctuary. At Tirthahalli you take the road towards Sringeri. After 8.5 kilometers is Bananki Home stay.

The winter was humid, cool and on hills.A place where we were to spend the next three days of our lives.

Thank you +Mayank Sharma for organizing such a beautiful trip.

TeleVision and children

What is the right time for children to get exposed to TV? What type of TV content is appropriate and at what age?

TV is a passive medium which dulls all minds. Any multimedia screen stops the mind from functioning and stops its growth. All senses are engaged as you sit and watch. The engagement is not productive. After few hours of TV you feel dull and irritated.

With nuclear families its easier to dump the child on the bean bag in front of TV as you go back to your chores and computer.

Some parents have attached the eating habits of the child with TV. Its common to hear deals like this

  1. "If you want to watch Tom and Jerry then you will have to finish the food."
  2. "If you don't eat food then I will switch off the TV"
Some children have got into the habit and use it as a bait for their parents
  1. "TV song and milk"
  2. "Chotaa bheem and roti"
In the night when children characters apparently go to sleep kid as young as 2.5 years have been seen to say this
  1. Now you can watch your TV, mine is slept.
  2. Mahadev might be coming now
I was going through an old article from New York Times which mentions that pediatrics have agreed on one thing and which is that no screen is good for child growth. There is no excuse in terms of educating a child or making your child compatible with peers or this is the age of computers.

This is also been heard as a common comparator
  1. My child is 1.5 years and s/he can browse YouTube
  2. My child is 2 years and s/he knows where angry birds is on the iPad.
Angry birds is a destructive game, and you are proud that your child enjoys breaking glasses and killing animals.

Sensitivity and sensibility is a dying form, do your bit to decelerate its growth in the children in your house and neighborhood.

Art of living rural part 1 at sagauli, Jhansi

Every school summer vacation was rush to a small village (Sagauli) in Jhansi. The love of the people and the hill beckoned. And then college happened, work happened and visits were reduced.

Now Art of living has given me another reason to connect back to Sagauli. As teacher a rural part 1 was scheduled during Navratri of 2012. With support from Mr. Ganga Prasad Shringirishi, who is based out of Gursarai, about 12 km from Sagauli most people of the village were informed about the upcoming event. He also arranged for the tape player for the course.

Ms Kanchan Ahuja ji, based out of Jhansi and a long time teacher with art of living also helped in discussion over the phone for organizing the course.

The general feedback was that this is the busiest time for the farmer and also for the womenfolk as they have to fast and do special pujas during each day of navratri. Still, Mr Ganga ji persisted and said we will have the course.

Nevertheless, we reached the village on 12th  Oct 2012. While talking to people it was not easy to explain what would the course do. Every body was of the impression that its a Yoga class and nothing more. Some had seen Guruji on TV. We set up a meeting near Temple at about 3 to explain to all what we were to do in the part 1 course. The temple only had very aged people and few youngsters. We announced that the course would begin from next day at 6 AM.

Next day morning we reached the village at about 6:10AM and there was no one at temple. Mr Ganga ji said let us sit and wait and we put the carpets in front of temple. Nobody turned up by 6:35AM. I called mother and told them the course is not happening and I would visit her next in Orcha.

Suddenly at 6:45AM people started trickling in. By 7 there were almost 15 men folk and they said you can begin. And I had to.

In the course there was one Mr. Virendra Nayak, who was a teacher in a local school. Post session requested him if we can have Bal Chetna Shibir in his school and he was more than eager to accept us. So we scheduled it for next day at 9 AM.

After the session we met Ms. Chandravali who runs the Anganvaadi in the village. She said it would be tough to gather the ladies as today being parma but she would try her best. We met her a day before and discussed the possibility of a separate women batch. The women batch was scheduled at 11AM.

We reached the venue for the women batch rural part 1 at 11 and there was nobody there till 12:10 PM and then we took the bike and started back to Gursarai. Midway we got a call that womenfolk had gathered at the venue by 12:30PM but we could not turn back and next day the women batch began at 11 AM and everybody was in.

Many people came in and out of the course and Sudarshan kriya was only given to those who had attended both days of long tape session of sudarshan kriya.

Mr Atul Vyas, from gursarai, provided the laptop for the last day of session. Everybody got a glimpse of the master and the work that art of living does.

We could had the last day of the course as the womenfolk were going to be very busy preparing for astmi puja. It was a holiday for school children. So we wrapped up the course on Saturday.

Some facts

  1. Many in village may think that they would get money at end of course. The government has spoiled the mindset of the villager by offering them free money that it is become common language now.
  2. Many in village may think you are there for a recruitment drive.
  3. In a village of 1000 people about 200 drink alcohol,  almost everybody drinks tea ( 1-2 litre a day), half of women and men folk consume tobacco in one form or other.
  4. The youth of the village is disinterested. Special effort needs to made to engage them.
So make it very clear that you are not there to make money nor you are on a recruitment drive. The concept of knowledge which was so engrained in village common sense has dried away.

Some outcomes

  1. Few people stopped tea totally from day 2.
  2. The school children took the last day of the Yoga session including satsang. They learn quick and they learn completely. A little holding hand is required to carry them through.
  3. The womenfolk were very sincere and gave more than 100% to every process of the course.
  4. The menfolk had the intellect interfering with some of the session.
  5. The men folk have continued to meet in village temple for last few days for group sadhana.
  6. Some of the seva projects taken
    1. stop drinking alcohol
    2. stop gutka (tobacco)
    3. stop tea
    4. improve belongingness amongst all
Touching moments.
  1. The children would not allow me to leave on the last day, they urged "one more game", "one more story" and I thought of disappearing in one of the extra game that we were playing but the moment I picked my bags everybody left the game and circled me.
  2. After the conclusion of Bal Chetna Shibir, Kuldeep, a 9 year old, ran and asked "Will Guruji come and help us in any kind of trouble that we have?"
  3. Womenfolk sang and danced on the last day of the course. They just wanted to be in Guru's space for more.
  4. Everybody was inviting for lunch and breakfast. I had to take turn accepting invitations.

It is possible to bring back the naturalness. Bring Sudarshan Kriya to your village and empower them to get back their natural rhythms.

live in the present and points system

The bhajans (songs in glory of self) took me away from me. I was serenading into depth of meditations. Today there were tonnes of questions flaoting in the space of mind like clouds vigorously drifting aloud.

And then the clearing of throat was heard.
And then the eyes were made to open. There was resistance but it did open to catch a glimpse of the master as he had settled in his seat.

There was a talk on some stick which was carried to Guru when their disciple met them for the first time in ancient times.
The property of the stick was, once its put to fire then it totally burns, not even leaving any residue behind.
Its a symbol of

  1. exchange, the Guru gives knowledge and disciple offers the stick.
  2. readiness, now i am ready to be burned in pursuit of knowledge
  3. no turning back, i have left all to come to know, now till i am saturated in knowledge i will not return
There was a talk on beliefs like if your chappal/shoes are stolen then your karmas get depleted. Guruji said, yes if its expensive shoes then its somebody else's gain but if its old then its somebody's gain. And then the knowledge poured in
  1. Rishis were smart and they created belief to blame somebody else instead of the person responsible for the offence.
  2. That way your focus shifted from the thief to the karmas.
  3. You would not be abusing the thief and getting lost in the loss.
  4. You will move on.
  5. You will come back to present moment.
  6. Its important to live in the present moment.
Same way if you were going on the road and missed the correct turn or took the wrong route or were stuck in traffic jam then even after coming back home would you remain in the past saying
If I took that road then I would have reached home earlier.
If ....then...
That moment is gone. It is past. You are in present. You are home.

Then the topics shifted to changing times. Times do not remain the same always. Sometimes its good and sometimes its bad. At the same time for some people its good and for some its bad. Like for example
  1. When you lose your mobile phone. Its bad for you but good for the thief.
  2. When the thief gets caught by police. Its bad for thief but good for police.
To quote Bob Dylan Times, they are a changin...

Points system.
Gods too works on the principles of points system. When you do seva/service then you gain points. Once your account is heavily loaded then you can demand God and then God has no choice.
If a person does so much seva and God is not able to handle him then he sends many devotees to him and his time is spent with them. Thus giving some bandwidth to the God.

Lord Krishna made a promise in Bhagvad Geeta that when you come to me and me alone then I will take care of you, totally and completely.

Therefore, in life whenever you are overwhelmed by situations and tasks at hand make a priority list. In the middle of that list put meditation and when you meditate then you give the ownership of the tasks to the divine. And the divine will see you through.

Same goes for attachment.

Same goes for fear of planets. If the fear lifts your spirits and takes you away from the world and explores spirituality then its good that साडे साथी (or saturn and its planetary effects) are affecting in. Even then if you chant
ॐ नमः शिवाये
then it creates a shield of protection around you. That protects you from the harmful effects of पांच तत्त्व (five elements), it contains all five elements.

You know all your ailments can only come from these five elements, earth/fire/water/air and space. There are no others. Chanting of mantras works. Rituals don't work but have a specific purpose. If you know the purpose then its fine otherwise just know that chanting mantras can help you overcome bad times.

Its like meditators/devotees hat being knocked off by the bullet whereas the non-meditator's head being rolled over by arrow.

is the collective consciousness, the mob mentality. They can even get into power. In most puranic stories Indra has known to cause nuisance when Rishi's meditate and do their tapas.

Because mob is scared of Guru/Siddha/enlightened being walking this planet. The Guru puts back the sense in the being and make them aware. Therefore, Indra tries to destroy public property. kill innocent lives, causes disturbances and loss to public and private properties.

is good if it uplifts your life, it takes you to a higher plane. If you love the Guru and are attached to him then its a good sign if you are growing but if you are stagnant or going down or feeling heavy in longingness towards the Guru then its time for you to go back and meditate and review your knowledge, your devotion. Its not the right attachment, its direction has to change.

The above words are listened and interpreted from art of living satsang that happens every evening at 6:30PM at Bangalore international art of living ashram. This excerpts is on 10th oct 2012 in the presence of His Holiness Sri Sri RaviShankar ji.
A more precise draft is available at under satsang section.

Balas Punch

Yesterday wend to art of living ashram to attend satsang in presence of His Holiness Sri Sri Ravishankar.

The satsang was rocking, the meditation was deep and the QnA session was mind boggling.

This post is about what happened after the satsang.

The kind hearted Bala was slowly crawling out of Ashram campus looking if somebody needed a drop. A more than normal presence hovered near the bonnet.

Bala said "we will turn right at konankunte cross. where do you want to go?"

The abnormal presence said "Its okay. I am going till Banasankari."

By now he was at the backdoor, trying to open it. Did not understand the eagerness. And the weight came into the car with Om Namah Shivaye sound.

Introduced myself and others in car and he did seem to be interested to meet us.

He asked "What was this all about?" (underlines are his)
someone amongst us "It was art of living satsang". (italics is one of us)

What is art of living?
You dont know about art of living. Its about seva, sadhana, satsang and sadguru.

I could only understand the last part. What are the rest.
The rest are something which you learn in art of living part 1 course.
How did you come here if you did not know about art of living.

I was just passing by, saw the light and came in. Is eating art of living? I like to eat. Lots of my friend say its not good. But still I like it.

(By now some of us had lost interest and were humming our own tunes, but the melodrama continued)

No, actually I am art of living volunteer in Bangalore city.
(Boy the whole city)
Where are you going?
Brigade Millenium
Can I come along? I want to catch a bus to Jayanagar 4th block
( destination shifted from Banasankari to Jayanagar 4th block)
Do you know this teacher in Brigade Millenium? We have worked a lot. So on and so forth.

Time for Bala's punch.
You know, sometimes we think we are funny but actually we are not. Its important to know that. We all fall into this humor trap.

And we burst out laughing.

Poor guy could only utter "Atleast all are laughing". His voice became grim and he started praising Sri Sri. Then he was quite for rest of the time.

Bala's undercut has clearly terminated poor guys belief in the sense of humor. In art of living we have them all so if you like variety then come to us.

And just before I bid goodbye I said "Be genuine".

Then love automatically flows in. Naturalness has bliss. Act is disaster. Dont put on.

Are you aware of your mind?

I will narrate this morning routine. I don't know about your mind. My mind has tendency to latch on to negative. This limits my world of possibilities. This kills the curiosity in me. With this dies adventure in me.

When I was awake a song was playing in the mind "प्यार बांटते चलो". It was 6:15. I got up twice before and moved around the house and came back and slept. I did not feeeeeeeeeel like getting up.

While using the loo a thought came in the mind. I should jog today. Then resistance built around it.
Why today?
You are already hungry. You're digestive system is working smart.
It is daylight. People would see you. It would have been better if it was little darker.
I kept firm. Looked for the socks. The white sports socks were not found. There was only one.
How will i look in grey thin socks and sports shoes?
Finally went to the shoes.
Are the shoes okay?
Haven't worn them for a while?
Aha! the sports socks are in the shoes?
They dont smell so I can wear them.
I was out of the house. A sudden spurt of energy and started to jog.
Don't jog too hard.
You are getting tired now.
Do not stop. Reduce speed.
At least do one round.
After a round started walking. Saw a familiar couple. Waved a instant hello to them. She waved back.
Should I go to them and talk about their closeness and some silly comment like "You look like honeymoon couple"?
Should I go them and talk about art of living course? Haven't i done that n times before.
Its so good to see them together.
Let them be alone.
Ignored them and jogged along. The mangoes were hanging low, not so low to jump and pluck but teasingly low, just like happiness in life. Nice cool morning wind.

At home. On yoga mat. Did surya namaskara, padma sadhana (learnt in DSN ), sudharshan kriya (learnt in part 1), sahaj samadhi (learnt along side part 2/advance course) and some more meditation. Was grateful to Art of living for giving me all these.

Read page 18 quote 17 "The only thing you must remember" from An intimate note to sincere seeker by Sri Sri Ravishankar ji. It talked about awareness and about the path of Art of living having it all. It has wisdom, laughter, service, silence, singingdancing, celebration, yagnas, complaints, problems, complications and chaos to add spice.

Life is so colorful!.

Female foeticide - revisited and reaffirmed by satyamevjayate

Aamir provides a balanced perspective on issue of female foeticide in India.

It is an evil born in 1970's through government initiative to curb population menace and picked up in 1990's with introduction of ultrasound. And now we have crores of girl infants perish through inhuman behavior across society sections.

Nawanshahr's former Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar could clean a district and reverse the male-female ratio. Why did we and government stop and could not support to help him build a framework through which we could curtail and eradicate evils like female foeticide and others.

Women are still considered objects of desire, only there to fulfill certain needs of male dominated society. Some have had to undergo abortion multiple times. Why cant we create a law that would equal this to murder and hang the perpetrators?

It is amazing that noble professionals from medical field including lady doctors have made killing a foetus a business, a means to earn more. Dont they get enough? What kind of conscience they would have? What trust should we have in them when we visit them next to save our lives? Who will bring them back to honoring life?

We have created this evil in just the last few decades. We have to STOP it HERE and NOW.

Divya Samaj Nirman with Vinod Menon ji #artofliving

Meeting People
The distance people travel. The family people leave behind and the way they engross in the course wholeheartedly was truly remarkable. The gratitude at the end of course. The dry venue on day one suddenly turns into flowery, colorful, beautiful, lively place on day three. Even after we left some one had planned cake cutting in Just Bake and we sang song to thank ourselves.

Intensity to break habits
You can hide/ignore certain habits of yours for a little time. Then a time comes when nature exposes your weakness in full public stadium view and you are left clueless. It is a divine justice that you get opportunity to overcome these habits through courses like this. Before the habit breaks it you learn to break it.

Building relationship
You will have to work to build relationship. Just stepping into a house do not expect royal treatment. Work on getting the respect to strengthen relationship. Your pain and stress will only increase if you only expect and not give in relationship. It will only be mutual exchange of blame from time to time. Your growth is not complete if you cannot grow people around you. Period.

Realizing holistic growth
Your growth is not complete by your growth alone. Your naturalness to do padma sadhana does not mean you have steadied your mind. To steady the mind you need to reach out. Reaching out means becoming more social. It means to attract solutions to social errors like corruption, dyning lakes, female inanticide etc.,
Your grand-father did not pay for water or milk. Your father paid for milk. You are paying for father. your progeny will pay for oxygen if you dont ACT NOW.

Knowing versus Doing
You can know a lot of concepts about life. If not put to practice they will die with your remains. If put to practice they will immortalize you. So focusing on DOING can channelize your life energy and give it a purpose.

You need to focus on your acts when you do with awareness. Else you are like the chicken who cannot go in a straight line. Sometimes they do pak pak here and sometimes there.

Work repeatedly on the mental pain till it diminishes. Just knowing the causes and avoiding it or suppressing it deliberately either through choice or medication will not clean it.

Game plan
Do you continue to lead life rolling like a stone gathering no moss OR do you want to stop, set goal and start working towards repeatedly achieving them?

I know you know all the above. I also know that you did not WORK on any of the above.

Line of gratitude and gratefullness.

First Mama's sudarshan kriya experience #artofliving

Here are words of my mama who is based out of orcha near Jhansi. He has been postponing doing sudharshan kriya for a long time time. Even this time around he was not sure of transport so I talked to Mickey ( young lad ) and he said he would help.

How come I missed it for so many days?
I should have come to bangalore and done it?
I have been doing yoga asanas before ram dev baba was born. Today it was so effective.
I have been doing meditation for so long. Today I came to know what it is.
My body was so heavy during yog nidra. I felt so light afterwards.
I am not tired.
I feel so happy.

The young lad who took him to venue in Jhansi from Orcha was sleeping after the vibrations shook him during the sudarshan kriya :)

How was your first sudarshan kriya experience? Or you too are on borderline.

a line of thank you note
thank you kanchan ji, sharda ji and Sri Sri Ravishankar ji.

Lost river Cauvery in trichy

There is only line of trucks till eyesight go.
On the highway, in the riverbed.
There is only sand left in the cauvery river delta.
Sand which spins money and fulfill desires of few

She is born in western ghats
Cities and civilizations have been built on her banks
Poets, kings and farmers have been inspired by her

What remains of her
is a small canal
in which people bath,wash,clean
children jump in 2 feet deep
adults wade around

there must have been a time when
the riverbed was half a mile wide

now its only property of few
who own the sand quarries

centuries old sand particles
are now part of some shaky concrete construction

tell me is nature beautiful in nakedness
or is it in abundance

the more you take away
the less you will have

once a majestic worshiped river
is now a mere canal
for trichy has huge temples
and less river

108 surya namaskar challenge - done - via @inyogathon #yogathon

Till yesterday it was impossible.
Now fresh confidence is beaming.
We really do not let ourselves hit the boundaries and break them.

Heard of yogathon a few months back and did not believe that people could take the challenge.
Today morning on world health, disbelief and joy was brimming across when I with my own eyes say 7 to 70 years old taking up the challenge and many achieving it.

Mr. Rengarajan brought 3 gold certificate and many spirit of participation. In the end there were greater demand of gold around him than the mere spirit of participation.

The venue was called wading pool. When I went to elita club to enquire they said "Wadding pool" and I wondered how yogathon was linked to wedding party.

But pool indeed it was. No water though. Only blue tiles. There was no one around at about 6 AM today and I was marveling at the buildings around.

Suddenly streams of people, young old, ladies gentleman started to come in towards the wading pool at elita promenade in JP nagar 7th phase, bangalore. I could only wonder.

People started jumping into the wading pool as IT was indeed the venue. Only one question floating around "Are you going for gold or spirit of participation?" And increasingly the inclination towards gold was higher.

I was split. I asked my body and it said just keep going till you can.

So the prayers were uttered and the little round ball of calming reddish sun made it appearance from behind the horizon at the exact moment, as if in anticipation.

The sequence of surya namaskaras began. We stopped to chit chat at about 30 rounds and then at about 55 and then 80 and 98 and behold 108.

Claps, cheers and wonder.

One more proud moment being part of art of living initiated movement. The challenges never end here.

Anger management from #artofliving

You go to a parenting workshop and learn that we need to give space to our children when they are angry. Lets take Ram, a 8 year old. He is developing his ego, his likes and dislikes. He has a fight in school with some bullies. He is quite in his van while coming home. He throws the bag after reaching home. His mother starts

Is that the way to keep your bag?
Dont you have any respect for your books?
Your books are saraswati.
If you dont respect them you will become dumb.
etc., you can add more in comments

Now he learns that if something is screwed around you then you have to shout and give back. He goes to his room, bangs the door and shuts himself off.

His mother has learnt to give him space, that is how his anger will simmer off. Once he has spent enough time with himself, he will become normal again.

He comes out of the room after 2 hours. He is desperately hungry and needs something to eat. The father has come back from office. He has the latest update from mother. He starts.

Don't you know how to behave with your mother?
Do they teach in school to throw around books?
We are spending so much on your school fees and this is what you give back to us?
I am taking so much crap in office just to give you guys a luxurious lifestyle and this is what I get?
etc., you can add more in comments

Anger is a fresh emotion to Ram. Ram has learnt his senior bullies at school screw his lunch hour. Then his parents. Now he has learnt to bang doors, leave dining table, find excuse to take a walk or simply shout back.

He has learnt how to express anger. Post few days he could feel sorry for his mother is always crying in one corner of house as he is not talking to anyone and simply comes and goes to his room in his home. Or he could ignore her as being sentimental, emotional etc.,

Now he has become a teenager and master of anger. Similar incidents happen in college life. He gets a nice job and starts work.

His bosses screw and suck the life out of him. And he is consistent with his expression. Either he quits jobs, he curses them, abuses them in coffee break and continues to go down the productivity lane.

Now who has the responsibility to tell Ram how and when to get angry, and let anger come and go. Its a emotion best left at surface. And it will always be there as long as he lives. The only way to handle it is to know it coming and then going. Its not meant to stay.

Your body and mind are not home of anger. Your physical home is not a place to lodge and board only.

Courses like ART EXCEL for children between 8-12 years, YES for teenagers from 13-18 years and YES+ for youths between 18-30 years help them understand, manage and express their emotions better. Both anger and love.
As parents/elders you can improve relationship with your young ones and understand them better through know your child and know your teen workshops. It only takes 2 hours.

As schools you can nurture values in children through NOVICE program.

Do not give your children/youth space to shut off.

Give them wings to fly and express.

Happiness is all you get at end of Upanishad Discourse

You go to school and college. You get a job.

You listen to Upanishads. What do you get?

You know, your every act, your every thought is towards getting happiness.
You earn so that you get a comfortable lifestyle.
You take up a project on your own because it appeals to you and promises to give you happiness in end.
You have progeny to get happiness.
You become a householder to get happiness.

Happiness is single most vital motivator behind every thing that you do on this planet.

The master too says that at end of upanishad discourse the only thing you get is happiness of heaven. Your mind settles down in knowledge. The striving continues but feverishness stops.

You self is getting wedded to infinite soul every moment. Your body is a miniature of entire universe. The finite body is becoming one with infinite universe.

In India there is a tradition of doing the marriage of Radha and Krishna. You dont get caught up in that, you move on to higher planes. For one, there was no character of Radha in श्रीमद भागवतम. धारा का प्रवाह जब लौट के आता है तो उसे राधा कहतें हैं.

Radha was a character created by a devotee poet somewhere in 11th century. But it signifies the longingness for the infinite in the finite krishna.

You know, after mahabharata, Arjun asked krishna to repeat Geeta. He said he was busy in the war and lost in the chaos and questioned him too much and too many times. Now he was in better mood and more inclined towards knowledge. But Krishna refused. He said that was Shiva or the formless infinite speaking through me. You remember that before the war I asked you to chant ॐ नमः शिवाय and you chanted for a very long time. Through the chanting you acquired a shield or कवच for your consciousness which strengthened you and protested you through the war.

That is what mantra do at the subtle level. They protect your soul and enhance your prana.

In western countries people go to the beach in plenty whereas in India they are happy being inland. Do you want to know why?

Because the water element contains and is enriched with devas pranas देव प्राना.  So in pristine clean beaches you get the rich energy. The same energy is depleted in beaches with drugs/liquors.

Same way when you enter into Art of Living international ashram in Bangalore there is shift in consciousness for many. Your jet lag goes, your tiredness goes and you relax.

You dont have to get into all the vedas and drink tonnes of vedic literature. Guruji said he was reading kena upanishad for the first time and as you would have noticed the grace just flows , not too high, nor too low but ok. He would read a few slokas and then get lost in meditation with them. Now is the time for चिंतन और मनन.

There is no point searching for a well when you are inundated in flood. The knowledge is overflowing in and around you. Start listening to it. Do some self-study स्वाध्याये.

You get a glimpse of infinity. You relax at the end of upanishad discourses too. So you are happy and relaxed.

Then you उपासना starts. उप और आसन. You sit in the company of the infinite.

A heart felt thank you reaches out with tonnes of gratitude towards Sri Sri Ravishankar ji. His discourse on Kena upanishad and my buddies of morning sadhana.

That is it

Every animal on this planet manifests a form of divine consciousness on this planet. Every extinction of animal loses that manifestations. That is what the string theory is also all about. They are the carriers of those energy. We, as humans, are carrier of knowledge.

A few ShivRatries (a hindu festival worshipping Lord Shiva) ago, on solar eclipse day, an incident occurred in a village temple in Tamilnadu. A cobra was climbing a particular tree ( bael ) and plucking its leaves and moving towards the Shiva Linga in the temple premise. All got scared looking at the serpent there. But he repeated the process 4-5 times and some had sense to take photos and videos. He is associated with Lord Shiva and was washing his sins on Solar eclipse according to local priest there.

Every part of our body is associated with a particular grain, a planet, a color, a flower, a god or goddess.
Like Saturn with mouth , jaws.
Jupiter with nose. Chick peas.
Mercury with forehead.

Every medicinal herb is for a particular part of body. Very specific.Without it there would be no medical science.
A herbologist will give you a herb and tell you , my dear its very nice for you and will benefit your affected part and cure it.

Krishna too in Gita, after uttering 700 slokas left it to Arjun. Now my dear its upto you. You make a choice and if you are comfortable and your conscience allows it then imbibe the knowledge.

So then continue from where we left in the last article the Lord of Mind, Indra and Divine Mother in form of Kundalini.
The compassionate mother showed a glimpse of Brahma to the mind and it settled down. The ego of devas was diffused.
You can get a flash of deva world but it only lasts for a blink. It cannot last for long.
If you need a more sustaining experience then you will have meditate and dissolve the mind into the brahman and then it stays. That is it. That is all upanishads are all about.

Universal consciousness is compared to forest. A forest left on its own is able to maintain and sustain diverse lifeforms. It is clean and it has place for all. A lion, a dear, an elephant , a frog and an ant. All live and stay in forest.

In Gita, Sri Krishna compared knowledge to inverted tree. Its roots are up there. We are all rooted up there. There are branches and leaves hanging around. Leaves dry and new one come. Branches go and new one comes. But the root only gets more robust.

Even Lord Shankaracharya said that he had come here for a vacation where as his home is up there.

The game of life. Get the BIG picture

As humans you get 8 units of life.
A stone has 1 unit of life. There are male and female in stones too. Ancient traditions and sculptors know it.
Water has 2 unit of life.
Air has 3 unit of life.
Space has 4 unit of life.
Trees have 6 unit of life.
Animals have 7 units of life.

Humans have 8 units of life. We are here and we need to move forward.

Geniuses have 9 units of life. In both sense either for great political system or social change or people like Hitler.

Your spirit has 9-10 units of life. In a while when you leave your body you become more powerful. You have more access and flexibility. The constraint of body is lost.

Your ancestors have 11 units of life. In many traditions we pray to ancestors. They can give you boons according to their capability. They cannot give all the boons.

Your pitr पितृ  have 12 units of life.

Kinnars have 13 units of life. They bless or curse with wealth. You will have great wealth but you will not be happy with your progeny. Your children will cause much distress within three generations.

Yokshas have 14 units of life. They bless or curse with special talent like singing. If you think the singing ability is their individual achievement then you are mistaken. A yaksha spirit is behind them. They make many happy around them but their own life is miserable. Unless they are on a spiritual path with a guru.  Every city has a yaksha.

Gods and Goddesses, देवा और देवी have 15 units of life. There are 33 different variations of them. Creator loves variety and thus he has 33 variations of god and goddess for you.
Where are they stationed?
Are they in the skies between the clouds? No they are in every cell of you. A single cell multiples and some become eyes, and some legs and nose.
How to manage them?
Through sounds and mantras. Pray and they are happy. Their happiness is reflected in your state of being. Like the filters of camera. You enhance a color by filtering it. You only see green but the light still has rest of the colors. A prism.
In heaven there are all the comforts but there is no love. For that even a deva has to take the human form and come on earth once in a million years to realize love, our existance, the thing which we are made up of. Sometimes we feel it and sometimes we dont, but its always there. Just like in yoga you take attention to a particular part of body and you are there, it does not mean that other parts of body do not exist.

A सिद्दा या सतगुरु Guru has 16 units of life. All the devis and devtas are around him, asking what can they do for him. But he has known the brahman and he does not ascertain that he knows the brahman. He moves on. चलती.
जहाँ गुरु नहीं वहां गति नहीं. Where there is no Guru there is no movement. Even in hindu pujas Guru comes before invoking the devas.

Hold your breath as I now narrate a Yaksha incident, not my interaction. I am still to develop the capability of communicating with the ethereal world. But Guruji's own incident.
Once the Yaksha of New york came to Guruji in middle of night and asked him if he could do anything. Guruji said, No, thank you. He was disappointed. Next day morning other people woke up and told Guruji that they felt a beautiful presence last night.
The same day Guruji had panel discussion in UN and in the room of 500 only 15 were around. Guruji realized it was work of Yaksha and he acknowledged it. The next moment the door opened and the room filled up.
Later Guruji thought I should have at least asked him to open a center a New York, or something so that he was not disappointed..

So ladies and gentleman we enter the ethereal world where the spirits are more powerful and have their own game plans. You and me are mere pawns being moved around in this game of life. We think we have control. How foolish of us?
In fact the same player is there on both sides of chessboard? The same brahman.
So drop your doership and enjoy the game.

You are like bubbles in coke bottle. You feel you opened the cap and are bubbling to go outside. How long will you last? The bubble has to burst.

There is a greater permanent council out there who is playing the game. They are more powerful. They have better reach and have been there for a very long time. Think you can challenge them or worst still ignore them and continue to relish in your make-believe world. Poor you.

Hold on to a Guru else you will be thrown around like a ping pong ball and never realize why the smacks in the bottom are getting harder and harder in life.

Because at the level of spirits you are nothing.

If that is not enough. Here is one more phenomenon. Remember even though its being narrated as a story below its not an event of past. It can happen everyday to some, to some on some days of life and for others in no days of life.

Once the pride of power got into the heads of devas. A yaksha came to meet them. Indra sent Agni ( form of energy ) to check out who had come. He came around and asked. The yaksha questioned back, Who are you? Agni was displeased and narrated his powers to burn anything and everything. Yaksha gave him a straw of grass. He just couldnt and went back.

Next  came Vayu, the atmosphere which has all living beings. Same story.
Then the Lord of Mind, Indra came along. By this time Yaksha disappeared and turned into a beautiful lady, the Mother Divine, Kundalini. Indra asked her who was the yaksha?

Hold on to your breath as tomorrow we will reveal the secret of Yaksha from mouth of Mother Divine.
Time for thanking
Sri Sri Ravishankar ji mentioned as Guruji above.
His discourse on kena upanishads.
And ofcourse the aol buddies who make this possible every moring at 5:30 AM. Can you believe it? Nor do i. The time I mean and not the spirits.

From the world of death to immortality

You know yet you dont know.
Know that and assimilate.

If you cannot manage that knowledge in this lifetime even after hearing it then its a great loss to you, the greatest of losses. You will yet again gather bundles of miseries and carry on to next lifetimes.

Like the man behind the projector sees only the light. The people in the cinema see only the movie.
There is only one bulb that throws light on the film reel and all characters are projected into the big screen. The single consciousness flows through one and all, through the hero and the villain, through the heroin as well as the side-kicks. It does not discriminate.
Its you who has the visceral experiences and get lost in the characters. The characters around you are the reflections of you. And if you extend that vision and project your identity on environment around and still wonder why there is so much negativity around you, why people shout at you, why do they spit and why do they turn away from you? Is it them or is it you?

Its simply your ego getting projected outside. Turn around and take the vision on the man behind projector. Then you will see the single light flowing through all. Then you will realize that people around you are there to tell you that you are like that and you may have to change.

Then you transcend the world of death and move on to the realm of immortality.

There are two worlds, the ethereal and the practical.
In ethereal world there is single consciousness, single light flowing through the universe in and around you.
In practical world you exercise free will and use intellect to be in satsang सत्संग. Avoid and dissociate from bad company.

Its how nature functions too. You get 20 apples and you wonder at the beauty of nature in creating them, but you will also witness a  rotten apple. You do not hold on to rotten apple and consume it just because nature has created it. You throw it with a smile.
Same way if you have 20 people and there is one which is a nuisance then you calmly and with a smile ask them to shut up and get lost.
A destined event will cause the interaction with unhealthy minds and body but use your intellect to drift apart from them. Do not let them hang around in the back of your mind with "Oh I should not have told like this", "Oh Poor guy , he is not educated" , oh etc., Every soul is taking its own route and time and do not get stuck up with them.

If they elevate well and good otherwise move on. Your mind needs to have peace at any cost.

This is the greatest form of bravery.
Being brave does not mean flying around in hot air balloon, with hundreds in rescue team and many family members with heart in mouth, praying to lord to save the poor guy. But its in striking the right balance between the knowledge and people/events around you.

सबसे बड़ा वीर्य अध्यात्म और व्यवहार जगत के बीच मैं समन्वय बनाने मैं है.

Its the highest and greatest loss if you are not able to cultivate this skill, build this courage.

Creativity is the product of intellect using the intuition, memory and experience/perception from the mind. It is the output of intellect. A poem comes out of intuition. Every invention, discovery has roots in this invention. Yesterdays Rishis are todays Scientists. They knew it then and these are discovering today.

Thanking Sri Sri Ravishankar ji for the kena upanishad discourse and friends and family.

I am unique. How?

Self-effort, a holy person's grace and knowledge can take you to immortalilty

Consciousness has four faculties. They are one but still for the sake of understanding we can divide.

  1. Experience - happenings in and around you, there is a complete movie that can be played even with   eyes closed
  2. Intellect - some aspects of brain
  3. Memory - you create some but nature has it all around you - mind
  4. Identity - your self - ego
We have five sense objects
  1. Eyes
  2. Nose
  3. Tongue
  4. Ears
  5. Skin
We have five senses
  1. See
  2. Smell
  3. Taste
  4. Hear
  5. Touch
Everything in Nature is permutation - combination of
  1. Fire
  2. Earth
  3. Water
  4. Air
  5. Space
We experience the following 5 from nature
  1. Through Seeing/Light/Fire we experience/see day/night, color of flowers, trees, heavenly objects
  2. Through Smell/Earth/fragrant particles we experience fragrance of flowers, food
  3. Through Saliva/Water we get the taste of food/fruits
  4. Through hearing/air we experience music/voice/noise
  5. Through touch/space/skin we feel the space element
In all our experience we spend energy.

Experience is spending energy.

Nature has given us sleep to rest so that we can again experience. Otherwise after a while the beautiful nature trail becomes tiring, the musical concert has to end as ears complain, you have to stop after 10th sweet/gulab jamun.

Senses have a limitation.
Sense objects are limited.
Desires are unlimited and hence cause imbalance.

The nature of the mind is to take senses to sense objects. मन
The nature of meditation is to take mind from sense objects to senses. नम

Come back to your senses.

In experience you/senses become one with sense objects.
Once with senses your intellect starts to function.
It will discriminate, analyse, understand and the summaries are stored in memory. You start to like something. You dont like somethings. You start creating identity for yourself.

You start to think that now I know. That is where upanishads says, When you start to ascertain that you know , you dont know.
And when you dont know , there is something that you know. You have a feeling that something in you knows.

Ignorance and knowledge gel together. They are not independent of each other.

If everything is all known in advance then it is already dead. Because it has already happened.
There is UNKNOWABLE, always. It is responsible for creating a new moment every moment.
Hence it is knows as UNKNOWN.

That which cannot be known yet known is your true identity.

Sri Sri Ravishankarji for his kena upanishad discourse and for art of living .
Hari for his apartment for sadhna and playing above CD.
Abhijit for the idea to play upanishad CDs, Shuchi, Bala, Abhay for hanging around.
And the readers who read and comment :)

Rejecting the infinite

When you reject you miss
When you accept you blossom

Only when you water the field the seeds will blossom into beautiful flowers and huge trees
If there are no seeds there will be no tree, no matter how much you water
You have all the seeds of virtues within you
know that
The infinite has already put the seeds in every cell of you

Do not reject a child as stupid, dull
Parents, Schools and colleges do
They lose the challenge to kindle a flower
They only get whats already blossomed

A teacher may not reject a student
Just because he appears to carry a heavy weight of karma
he cannot postpone his enlightenment to few more cycles of janma and cleaning
A student may not reject the teacher
he may not doubt is he really loving and caring as talks
or is he just a walking encyclopedia

Your capabilities may differ
Some may be fair, some brown and some dark in complexion
Some may be fluent, some barely talk and some can be dumb
Some may listen clearly, some barely and some can be deaf
Some may see through the divine, some the world and some can be blind
No matter where you scale in your capability
Your ability to realize the infinite is the same

Rejection is finite
You reject something that you seem is beyond you
You reject what is unknown
The unknown is you
You reject you

Some one knocks the door, you exclaim and jump out of sofa
You are soaked in the watching television, someone pokes you
You are in deep slumber, someone puts thin cotton in your nose
You say
What was that? Who is that? How did that come here? When?
Those are the moments of wonder
You are introduced to it and then you let it pass
You need to stay with wonder more

The WHAT is a leap from known to unknown
The WHO, HOW, WHEN all keep you in unknown

The WHY generally belongs to a miserable mind
No matter how you try you can never get into that stuck mind
Therefore the journey begins with chanting of peace

ॐ शांति शांति

Only in rest
you can enquire,
you can explore

Encourage the enquiring spirit
Be with the questions,
leave any explanations aside

Behold and watch the descent
of infinity within you

Inspired from Sri Sri Ravishankar's discourse of kena upanishad
